Jasmine Gordon is a 4.0 student and Monrovia High who excels also in sports, basketball particularly. This young lady came to our attention via a local legendary Basketball Coach, Rodney Johnson, who has devoted his life to helping kids in Monrovia and Duarte achieve not only physical fitness but academic fulfillment as well.
Jefferson introduced The Weekly to Jasmine at a recent football game where she was supporting her male Wildcat football team. It was evident in her bubbly personality and enthusiasm that this young athlete is going places.
Coach Jefferson, , encourages young people in Monrovia and Duarte particularly, to focus their attention on all positive aspects of their lives and hopefully attain the goals they aspire to. Teaching respect for fellow man as well as good sportsmanship is fundamental to Jefferson.
Rodney Jefferson is the Owner and Director of the “A” Game Fundamental Basketball Clinic. Coach Jefferson is a motivational speaker and intercultural mediator with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications. His impressive record of community outreach services includes acting as liaison between city officials and at-risk youth to reduce gang violence. He has also worked with city officials and local businesses to develop strategies to provide job training and increase employment opportunities for youth. Coach Jefferson is the former recruiter of athletes for the Citrus College Men’s Basketball program and the former head Junior Varsity coach at Monrovia High School. He has coached high-level summer basketball camps at USC, Pepperdine University, Arizona State University and University of Louisville.
Jasmine Gordon just returned from a trip to Texas with her family where she was treated like royalty at UTPA where she plans on attending next year and becoming part of the schools winning team.
The University of Texas-Pan American women’s basketball head coach DeAnn Craft welcomed Jasmine Gordon as one of the team’s newest members for the 2009-10 campaign.
“She’s the perfect fit for us,” said Craft, who is in her sixth year at the helm of the Lady Broncs. “She’s a tremendous person of character. I like her athleticism, her ability to put the ball on the floor and she can get to the rim, plus she has extended range.”
Craft also said when Gordon was evaluated in the summer, Craft liked her versatility and knew Gordon was going to be utilized perfectly in the Lady Broncs five out motion offense.
Gordon who signed her National Letter of Intent on Nov. 19 comes from Durate/Pasadena where she lettered four years at Monrovia High School and received the 07-08 Team MVP, was the Pasadena Star News Athlete of the week and was the team captain for the 08-09 campaign. In the 07-08 season she averaged 20 ppg.
A thrilled Jasmine Gordon said:
“I’m really excited and I’m glad the team is welcoming,” said Gordon. “The coaches seem so nice and they made me feel like it was the place for me.”
