Music continues locally as at least six groups have concerts planned this week and next.
-Crown City Symphony
This ambitious group led by conductors Marvin Newmann and Chad Prado, consists of talented younger players who deserve your attendance and encouragement. Crown City Symphony will present three free concerts of the music of Handel, Cowell, Chaminade, and Mozart with soloist Cheryl Lopez. Flutist. The concerts scheduled are: 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Altadena Senior Center, 560 E. Mariposa, Altadena; 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, Villa Parke Community Center, 363 E. Refreshened with new members, The Avanti Quartet, headed by violinist Tamsen Beseke, now adds Carrie Kennedy, violin,Laura Pearson, viola, and Maria Crosby, cello, to play works by Mozart, Beethoven and Dvorak. The concert is at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the United Methodist Church of Monrovia, 140 E. Palm Ave., Monrovia. Tickets, at the door, are $20; students, $15. -Restoration Concert Series
South Pasadena’s Restoration Concerts are with professional free-lance musicians. In their third concert in a series of eight, the Gary Foster Jazz Ensemble will perform at 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16 at the South Pasadena Library, 1115 S. El Centro St., South Pasadena. Tickets are $18 at the door. Funds are used to restore the community room at the library.
-Saint Cecilia Orchestra
Under the baton of Sonia Marie De Leon de Vega, the Saint Cecilia Orchestra has accepted the mission of serving the Latino community. To fulfill their goal, they will present a concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 at Occidental College’s Thorne Hall, 1600 Campus Rd., Los Angeles. Soloist with the orchestra is pianist Byran Pezzone, locally a Cal Phil favorite, who knows his way around both classical piano and jazz. Pezzone will be featured in De Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain”. Tickets are $26 and $20; $7 for youth age 17 and under. For information, please call (323) 259-3011.
-Southwest Chamber Music
The Zodiac. The Hubble Telescope. These are the inspirations used by avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen for his cosmic sound-world work “Tierkreis” which will be performed by the Grammy-winning group as an octet, then turn to Schubert’s Octet in F-major, a rarely performed work. This finely honed group performs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena; a repeat concert will be given at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17 at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, 200 S Grand Ave., Los Angeles. -Music in Sacred Spaces
Timothy Durkovic, piano and Paula Fehernbach, cello, begin works by Beethoven including Sonatas, Op. 5, the “Judas Maccabeus” and “Magic Flute” variations, at 3 p.m.on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 400 W. Outstanding professionals come from Santa Barbara to play at the Huntington Library, San Marino. This concert one of eight in their series, will include the music of Wilson, Schubert and Brahms G minor Piano Quartet. Members Adrian Spence, Nurit Pacht, Richard O’Neill, Lars Hoef and Kevin Fitz-Gerald perform at 8 p.m.on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Tickets are $42. -Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra
These excellent “A” graded young musicians under the equally excellent baton of Music Director Jo Stoup will perform the “B” music of Bach, Brahms, Bizet and Bernstein at 3:30 p.m. Nov 23 in Sexson Auditorium of Pasadena City College. The coaches Blake Hanna, Kelly Bunch, Kate Green, Johnny Ng, Ramon Villanueva (and Stoup) will either conduct a work or appear as guest soloist.
