Caruso Affiliated, under the leadership of CEO Rick Caruso, is launching a new scholarship program that will honor two graduating high school students who have shown dedication to academic excellence and a commitment to improving their communities, by awarding them the “Spirit of American Youth Scholarship.”
“We are touched by the circumstances of so many young people who are trying to press ahead and chart their future despite the financial challenges of these tough economic times,” said Caruso. “Our inaugural Spirit of American Youth Scholarship is designed to ease that burden, by helping to pay for the tuition for two outstanding students to attend an accredited college or university. Our goal is to help make the dream of higher education a reality rather than a dream deferred.”
Caruso said the inaguaral scholarships would be the beginning of an annual scholarship program which will offer financial assistance to two scholarship recipients per year.
The scholarship is open to public or private school seniors in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys including the communities of Glendale, Montrose, Pasadena, Arcadia, Eagle Rock, La Canada, La Crescenta, Los Feliz, San Marino, Toluca Lake, Burbank, Studio City, Sherman Oaks and Encino.
According to the company, the award is named after a sculpture at one of their mall’s called “The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves” – which personifies the unbreakable spirit, honor and idealism of thousands of soldiers who fought to liberate Europe in World War II.
To qualify for the scholarships, graduating students must demonstrate the academic potential to attend college or university and provide examples of the roles they have played in helping to improve their communities. They also must write a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay on how they would invest in their communities to create a brighter future for generations to come.
To be considered for The Spirit of American Youth Scholarship, students must meet certain eligibility criteria in addition to the qualifications previously mentioned. They must have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extracurricular or other activities. They also must be committed to getting a degree and be enrolling for the first time in an American-accredited college or university as a full-time, first-year student in the fall of 2009. In addition, they must complete and submit the scholarship application form, and the required essay by the June 5 deadline for this year, as well as a teacher recommendation form. The two scholarship winners will be announced the week of June 22 at each recipient’s schools’ graduation ceremonies.
Applications for The Spirit of American Youth Scholarship are available online at The Americana at Brand website, www.americanaatbrand.com. Comprised of Caruso Affiliated team members, the committee will review, discuss and evaluate all applications and the candidates’ ability to articulate their academic and community outreach goals and plans for achieving them. The winners will receive The Spirit of American Youth Scholarship award letter and certificate, and The Spirit of American Youth Scholar jacket.
Caruso Affiliated team members have outreached to all the high schools in the covered areas to advise of the opportunity for their graduating students and to encourage qualified candidates to participate in the process.
Starting in 2010, applications for the scholarships will begin in October with the annual deadline for submissions no later than March 31 for each year’s fall enrollment.
