Huntington Library Fall Plant Sale on Tap

January 26th, 2009 by Temple City Tribune

Fall Plant Sale Slated for Oct. 11–12

You don’t need to go to New England to experience fall color. Bring home autumn hues for your Southern California garden—from foliage and flowers—at the Fall Plant Sale Oct. 11–12 at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. Hours for the sale are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days. Admission to the sale is free.

Experts know that the secret to a beautiful garden is to get started in the fall, laying the groundwork for great blooms throughout the year. The event will feature a bountiful selection of fall foliage plants and autumn-blooming flowers as well as bulbs, perennials, and shrubs to plant now for blooms in the spring and summer. Many unusual and hard-to-find varieties will be available.

Highlights of the sale will include a great selection of colorful fall-blooming salvias, including the dazzling Salvia ‘Limelight,’ with its rich, blue-purple flowers supported by showy chartreuse calyces. Other standouts include the blue-flowered Salvia ‘Argentine Skies’ and the dramatic Salvia discolor, with jet-black blooms—stunning when planted in combination with silver-leaved plants. Also look for Cuphea ignea, or “Cigar Plant,” with lovely vermillion flowers that attract hummingbirds; Phygelius ‘Yellow Trumpet,’ with its masses of pale yellow, trumpet-shaped blossoms; Plectranthus ciliatus, with its striking green and burgundy leaves; Plectranthus forsteri ‘Marginatus,’ with scalloped white edges around large green leaves; and much, much more.

Knowledgeable Huntington staff and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about plant selection and care, as well as to offer advice on other practical fall gardening topics such as soil improvement, pruning and dividing, lawn care, and tackling pest problems.
